During my apprenticeship in France, particularly at the legendary Raffins workshop, I was taught that “remechage est la marque de l’atelier” or “rehair is the standard of excellence of the workshop”. This means that the workshop will be judged based on the standard of rehair delivered consistently to the clientele. It is the most visible and common service provided by a bow workshop. As such it is the most important figurehead representing the standards and quality of the workshop. I use only live horsehair that I personally sourced through Chinese Mongolians suppliers and it is of the highest quality available. Each rehair is done individually to match the playing qualities of the bow and the musician themselves using traditional methods taught to me in France. The only components used are live Mongolian horsehair, natural linen thread, rosin binder and maple blocks. There is never any glue used nor is it necessary.  The time spent during the rehair also gives me a chance to proactively assess the condition of the bow in case of concerns with physical state or function that need to be addressed. There is never a charge for this. Finally the bow is returned to the client cleaned and regulated with a protective application of French polish which gives  the musician true confidence to continue their craft making more beautiful music.
